Hurricane Hanna lashes south Texas coast, already beset by Covid

The fresh concerns from Mann and meteorologists Dan Satterfield and Eric Fisher came after the Category 1 Hurricane Hanna-the first hurricane and eighth named storm of this season-made landfall twice Saturday evening in southeast Texas, a region "already battered by the coronavirus pandemic", as the New York Times noted.

Houston's deputy director for emergency management said Hurricane Hanna was a test of the state's ability to respond to disaster while trying to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

The NHC said Saturday the storm "will be near the main Hawaiian Islands late tonight and will move over parts of the state Sunday and Monday", bringing high winds, heavy surf, and rainfall of up to 25 centimeters.

"This challenge is complicated and made even more severe, seeing that it's sweeping through an area that is the most challenged area in the state for COVID-19".

The Army Corps confirmed the video was from June 5, when a high wind gust knocked over panels in the El Paso area.

A combination of warm sea surface temperatures and a low wind shear environment enabled the storm to reach hurricane strength, making it the fourth US landfalling storm of an already active 2020 North Atlantic hurricane season.

White House clashes with Republicans over Covid-19 relief
Other GOP senators also sounded unsure over the timeline of the bill's release and said the bill is still a "work in progress". Pelosi slammed the Republicans' delay in her press conference Friday, calling it a "dereliction" of their duty.

Tropical Storm Gonzalez roared to life in the Atlantic, but rapidly lost strength as it tracked toward the Windward Islands, though still bringing heavy rain and strong winds. "We don't want to expose anyone during this storm".

On Friday, residents in several Texas communities in Kleberg County, south of Corpus Christi, were urged to evacuate their homes ahead of Hanna's arrival. "The disturbance is large and heavy rain and gusty winds extend far from the center", the NHC said.

Hanna still posed a threat, forecasters said, noting it could dump upward of 45 cm of rain in isolated areas of southern Texas through today.

"We are early in the hurricane season, there are still storms brewing in the Atlantic that could possibly head our way over the next couple of months", said Canales.

Meanwhile, another hurricane, Douglas, is making its way towards Hawaii. Conditions are not ideal for further development as wind shear and dry air have been affecting the storm lately, but conditions are expected to improve as it moves away from the dry air now in the Atlantic.

It was forecast to lose more steam as it moved across Texas and northeastern Mexico, and on Sunday weather watch officials canceled the storm surge warning they had issued for the Texas coast.
