High-Profile Twitter Accounts Swept Up in Wave of Apparent Hacking

A number of high-profile Twitter accounts, including those of USA presidential candidate Joe Biden, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, Elon Musk, Uber, and Apple, were breached simultaneously in what's a far-reaching hacking campaign carried out to promote a cryptocurrency scam.

Twitter didn't say how many accounts were affected by these measures, or provide instructions on how affected users could regain access.

It's easy to imagine a scenario where, instead of tweeting about Bitcoin, a hacked Elon Musk account plunges Tesla Inc.'s stock into a tailspin.

Details: The accounts of Jeff Bezos, Mike Bloomberg and Kanye West, as well as companies Apple, Bitcoin.org, Coinbase and Ripple, were similarly compromised, in addition to several others.

The fact the hackers managed to access Twitter's internal systems suggested to some the hackers may have abused the access before promoting the fake cryptocurrency giveaway.

Many shared memes and jokes to reflect upon the situation claiming it's time for the unverified accounts to steal the show online.

"The accounts tweeted that they "partnered with" a company called CryptoForHealth". "This appears to be part of a larger issue that Twitter is facing", a spokesperson for the billionaire said in a statement. Just previous year, the account of Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey was broken into a nd used to tweet racist and vulgar comments.

In the NY case, they were sceptical about a Trump lawyer's argument that a president can not be investigated while in office. Trump promised to release his tax returns during his 2016 campaign for the White House but has declined to do so.

According to Motherboard, Twitter said it is still investigating where the truth lies.

"We detected what we believe to be a coordinated social engineering attack by people who successfully targeted some of our employees with access to internal systems and tools", Twitter explained five hours into the incident investigation.

Despite this, the rumour has persisted and spread, with Chinese media directly quoting reports on USA outlets, including CNN, which included the Israeli leader's account among the list of those hacked. U.S. President Donald Trump, for example, regularly uses Twitter to post about national and geopolitical matters, and his account is closely followed by media, analysts and governments around the world.

On Wednesday, in the midst of the attack, Republican Senator Josh Hawley fired off a letter to Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey asking about the security of the platform.

"If key employees at Twitter were tricked, that's actually a serious cybersecurity problem in itself", he said. The hackers were able to target some of the most popular users on the platform, including Elon Musk and Joe Biden. The TRON founder famously lunched with Warren Buffet, whose Twitter account was among those compromised, and Sun seems anxious to send a message that the crypto community will not tolerate scammers.
