United States could see 100000 new Covid-19 cases per day, Fauci says


New cases of Covid-19 could rise to 100,000 a day if behaviors don't change, infectious-disease expert Anthony Fauci told a Senate panel Tuesday.

"It is going to be very disturbing, I will guarantee you that", he said.

Fauci warned that the daily increase of new cases in the United States, now around 40,000, could reach 100,000 if people do not adhere to social distancing guidelines and wear masks.

"That's one of the reasons why we have to make sure we engage the community as we're doing now, to get community people to help us, for people to understand that we are doing everything we can to show that it's safe and that it's effective and that it's for the good of them as individuals and in society to take the vaccine", Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said.

Dr Fauci said areas seeing recent outbreaks are putting the entire nation at risk, including areas that have made progress in reducing Covid-19 cases. He cited recent video footage of people socializing in crowds, often without masks, and otherwise ignoring safety guidelines.

'I can tell you that when they announced that the other day, obviously there was substantial disappointment with American Airlines, ' Redfield said.

COVID-19 cases more than doubled in June in at least 10 USA states, including Texas and Florida, a Reuters tally showed. "And so I am very concerned".
