"The catastrophic flooding we are seeing in Midland is a culmination of the impacts of the increased unusual and severe weather events that are amplified by climate change", said Wozniak, "and this latest event highlights the importance of big thinking right now from leaders around how to plan properly with our changing climate to keep our families safe". "High water levels also threaten the integrity of Dow's facility, which we know houses unsafe chemicals".

"If you have not evacuated the area, do so now and get somewhere safe", said Whitmer during a 10 p.m. press conference "This is unlike anything we've seen in Midland County".

A mid-Michigan dam that collapsed under heavy rains Tuesday, forcing the evacuation of thousands, had its license revoked in 2018 over concerns it could not handle big floods. He said over 16,000 people participated in the Michitario Friendship Games that took place between the two communities over 21 years before ending in 2008.

He said that most people so far are sheltering out of town with friends and relatives, but he has not checked the shelters Wednesday morning. "We will share additional information as it becomes available".

The warning is in effect until 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, and is for the Tittabawassee river from the Sanford Dam to the Chippawassee school area in East Central Midland County.

Rapidly rising water overtook dams and forced the evacuation of about 10,000 people in the central part of the USA state of MI, where flooding struck communities along rain-swollen waterways and the governor said one downtown could be "under approximately 9 feet [2.7 metres] of water" by Wednesday. The National Weather Service warned anyone near the engorged river to seek higher ground after "catastrophic dam failures" at the Edenville and Sanford dams, about 140 miles north of Detroit.

In response to the dam break, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's office said an emergency declaration will soon follow.

Pictures and videos of the flooding and the damage it has caused appeared on social media. "Stay safe, and take care of each other". "We will continue to partner with the county to ensure they receive the needed resources to respond and recover from this incident".

Emergency responders went door-to-door early Tuesday morning warning residents living near the Edenville Dam of the rising water. Also, do not attempt to drive across flooded roadways.
