The Pilatus PC-12, a single-engine turboprop plane, crashed shortly after take-off approximately a mile from the Chamberlain airport, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said.

The crash happened as major winter weather barreled through the region, FAA spokesperson Lynn Lunsford said. The Weather Service warned of ice, snow and winds as fast as 40 miles per hour, as stormy weather across the country is predicted to hit millions of travellers returning home after Thanksgiving.

"The men and women of law enforcement, first responders and medical professionals should be commended in their heroic actions to rescue the victims in extreme weather conditions", Maule Rossow said in a statement. The small plane was bound for Idaho Falls, Idaho.

NTSB investigators were expected at the site later Sunday.
