Biden decries reports about Trump's conversation with Ukraine's president

The allegations appear to center on a July call in which Trump reportedly told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that incomplete corruption investigations on Ukraine's part had inhibited relations between the two countries.

Trump did not name Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in several tweets earlier Friday taking issue with news reports about a call he said he had with "a certain leader", saying "there was nothing said wrong, it was pitch flawless!".

In May, Giuliani made plans to go to Ukraine to ask Zelensky to look into what prompted special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe and to look into former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter's links to Ukraine.

According to a report in the Washington Post, Trump, in a phone call with an unnamed foreign leader, made an unspecified promise that so alarmed one member of the intelligence community that it yielded a complaint with the inspector general.

Gowdy, a Fox News contributor, said he doesn't know the facts about the whistleblower allegations and the country's "political culture" needs to come to a point where people do not speculate about such matters for partisan gain. "And I'm going to give them reasons why they shouldn't stop it because that information will be very, very helpful to my client, and may turn out to be helpful to my government".

"Knowing all of this, is anybody dumb enough to believe that I would say something inappropriate with a foreign leader while on such a potentially "heavily populated" call", he said.

The revelation that Trump pushed Zelensky to pursue the Biden probe, which was first reported by the Wall Street Journal, represents the most detailed account so far of the president's conduct that prompted a USA intelligence official to file a whistleblower action against the president.

Trump said Friday the complaint was "just another political hack job" and insisted any phone call he made with a head of state was "perfectly fine and respectful".

Trump was asked Friday if he brought up Biden in the call with Zelenskiy, and he answered, "It doesn't matter what I discussed".

House intelligence committee Chairman Adam Schiff said that he was prepared to go to court to try to force the Trump administration to open up about the complaint. I've had conversations with many leaders.

But he nevertheless appeared defensive about his interactions with Zelensky, with whom he will meet next week on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

Asked by a reporter if the call in question was one he had July 25 with the president of Ukraine, Trump claimed he didn't know but he then characterized that conversation as "beautiful".

The alleged whistleblower didn't have direct knowledge of the communications that partly prompted the complaint to the inspector general, an official briefed on the matter told CNN on Thursday.

Giuliani previously said last month that he had spoken to a Ukrainian official about Biden, who is the Democratic presidential front-runner, saying his conversation focused on Biden's possible role in the prosecutor's dismissal of the gas company investigation. Murphy tweeted that during his own visit it was clear to him that Ukraine officials were "worried about the consequences of ignoring Giuliani's demands".

The acting director of national intelligence, Joseph Maguire, has so far refused to share any details of the complaint with lawmakers, leading to an outcry among Democrats. The administration has not shared the complaint with Congress, as is generally required by law, angering Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee.

Ukraine's prosecutor general told Bloomberg in May he had no proof of wrongdoing by Biden or his son.

When CNN host Chris Cuomo asked if Giuliani requested that Ukraine investigate Biden, Giuliani replied, "No, actually I didn't".
